London 2012 Olympics Tickets Tours Hotels: The Chinese Are Coming!

"Leeds here I come!"
As Spyns clients gear up for our London 2012 tour packages, English cities are hoping to cash in on pre-games training camps. A good example is the city of Leeds. China's athletes will be based in the northern English in the final build-up to the London 2012 Olympics, organisers announced Wednesday. China will use the Headingley Campus at Leeds Metropolitan University to train and acclimatise. China is set to be one of the key nations at the 2012 Games having topped the 2008 Beijing Games table with 51 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze medals. Spyns believes this is just part of a pre-invasion force. Just kidding! The next war will be a trade war between the US and the Chinese, without a shot fired we hope.

The Chinese Athletic Association said it was "confident Leeds will provide an ideal training base for our athletes as we prepare for the London 2012 Olympic Games." Around 50 athletes and officials will head to Yorkshire's biggest city. It is the first deal to be signed between any of the Chinese squads and a British city. "Pre-Games training camps provide essential preparation for every athlete, and Chinese competitors will enjoy world class facilities in Leeds," said London Games chairman Sebastian Coe. "Having grown up in the county, I'm delighted that Yorkshire people, and especially the Chinese community, will be sharing in the excitement of the Games in their own back yard." To make the athletes feel at home, Leeds will ban certain search engine terms and arrest heads of various Leeds-based human rights organisations. Again...kidding!

British cities hope that hosting pre-Games camps will bring in millions of pounds (dollars, euros) worth of revenue as well as giving locals a chance to see some of the 2012 stars up close and even train alongside them. Since 1988, Leeds has been twinned with Hangzhou in China's eastern Zhejiang province. Their partnership is aimed at developing business, educational and civic links.

London 2012 Olympics Tickets Tours and Hotels: Multilingual Shakespeare On Offer as Part of London 2012

Now Playing: Romeo & Juliet in Jive

Mad dogs and Englishmen! As Spyns' clients count down to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London (and London 2012 tickets in March), the cultural events surrounding the London Olympics are starting to gain momentum.

Each of William Shakespeare's 38 plays will be performed in a different language, including Arabic, Spanish and Urdu, during a theatre season in Britain to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games. Shakespeare's Globe theatre in the British capital said Thursday it would host the special season over six weeks, beginning next year on April 23, the playwright's birthday.

Shows will included "The Taming of the Shrew" in Urdu, starring Pakistani television star Nadia Jamil as Katherine, and "King Lear" in Australian Aboriginal languages. Other performances include "Julius Caesar" in Italian, "Troilus and Cressida" in Maori, "The Tempest" in Arabic and "Love's Labour's Lost" in British sign language. "The Globe will create an international Shakespeare community in the heart of London, as a prelude to the internationalism which will fill the capital later in the year with the Olympics," said the Globe's artistic director Dominic Dromgoole.

The project is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad which was set up in 2008 to celebrate the Olympics. The Globe is a reconstruction of a theatre where many of Shakespeare's plays were performed before it burnt down in 1613. Given the catfight regarding the London 2012 stadium, Spyns wouldn't be surprised if the mega-million pound stadium 'did a 1613.'

London 2012 Olympics Tickets Hotels and Tours: Cue the Thames Cable Car

"I say good man, where the devil is the Olympic Stadium?"
http://www.london-tours-2012.com
http://www.london2012-tours.com
http://www.london-olympiad.com/

I was in London last week on an Olympic pre-trip swing and can safely say London will have a transportation issue come July 2012. But the city seems to have found a solution: a ridiculously expensive cable car!

A wildly expensive £25 million (US$34 million) cable car scheme is set to get planning permission tomorrow, and will be ready in time for the 2012 Olympics. The scheme will be privately funded and Transport for London (TfL) are confident the funds would be found when they vote on the plans. John East, Newham Council's divisional director of planning says: ''All the discussions I have had with Tfl suggest they will be able to secure that private funding, or sponsorship to enable the cable car to happen.' 'Bearing in mind where we are with public finances and the scrutiny that public bodies are under, why would TfL come this far if they weren’t sure?''

Perhaps Tfl could invest the millions of pounds into keeping the tube trains running on time when millions of people test London's creaky transport system to its limits! The cars - a first for a UK city - will cross the Thames connecting the O2 arena and ExCel centre, between the Greenwich Peninsula and Royal Docks. The venues will both be used in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. The scheme is part of the ongoing regeneration of East London and will be significant for improving connections to the site. TfL believes that construction jobs will be found competitively allowing the scheme to be produced quickly and cheaply.

Taking just five minutes to do the crossing, London Mayor, Boris Johnson told the Daily Mail: ''A cable car spanning the majestic Thames would not only provide a unique and pioneering addition to London’s skyline, but also offer a serene and joyful journey across the river." He added: "Passengers would be able to drink in the truly spectacular views of the Olympic Park and iconic London landmarks whilst shaving valuable minutes from their travelling time. It would also provide a much needed enhancement of cross river options to the east of the city.”

The cable cars will match the capacity of 50 buses per hour, carrying up to 2,500 passengers in each direction arriving every 30 seconds, says London Transport Commissioner, Peter Hendy. Now we need only build the damn thing...after the arena, Olympic park, hotels, roads....tea time!

London 2012 Olympics Tickets Hotels and Tours: London 2012 Tickets On Sale Mid-March

http://www.london-tours-2012.com
http://www.london2012-tours.com/
http://www.london-olympiad.com

In what we at Spyns are predicting to be a right British clusterf*ck, millions of tickets for the London 2012 Olympics will go on sale starting Tuesday, March 15, 2011. London Olympic organisers believe this will proceed seamlessly whereas former Olympic games suggest otherwise. While Spyns applauds London 2012's goal of making these fair and equitable games, it would be naive to deny that in a country with a betting hall on every street corner that an enourmous black market won't spring up within 1 hour of the first ticket sales. But let's remain in the honeymoon stage and detail how London 2012 tickets will go on sale.

Lord Sebastian Coe, the London 2012 chairman, has announced that the process for allocating tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Games will begin on Tuesday 15th March this year.
With 26 sports, featuring 38 disciplines, taking place between 27th July and 12th August, competition is sure to be high as the public vie for a chance to see some of the world’s best athletes take part in the 30th edition of the modern Olympics.

There will be over six million tickets available, with prices starting at £20 ($25-$30), for those wishing to attend the games. The application process will be open from 15th March through to 26th April, in which time those hoping to attend must apply for the events they wish to view. Anyone who truly believes they'll spend just £20 ($25-$30) to watch the bastketball finals have likely purchased 'a substantial interest' in London Bridge. According to Olympic organisers, tickets will be allocated to those who have applied within the six week time period. If events are oversubscribed then tickets will be allocated via a ballot system. There will also be a number of free events throughout the games as the Triathlon, Road Cycling, and Marathon will all take place on the streets of London. Furthermore, those not able to attend London itself will not be without the opportunity to taste the magic of the Olympics. Canoeing will take place at Dorney Lake in Buckinghamshire and in Lee Valley White Water Centre in Hertfordshire; mountain biking will be hosted by Hadleigh Farm in Essex; while sailing will be hosted in Weymouth. Spyns asks: how the hell are you supposed to watch sailing as a competitive sports anyway?

The Olympic Games football (soccer for our North American readers) tournament will also be hosted by a number of arenas outside of the capital. As well as Wembley Stadium, football will also be played at the Ricoh Arena of Coventry City, Manchester United’s Old Trafford, St James’ Park of Newcastle United. Furthermore, the national stadiums of both Wales and Scotland will get in on the action as the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, and Hampden Park in Glasgow will also be used for the football at the Olympics. This will give everyone the opportunity to buy some ridiculously overpriced rail tickets as I did while taking the Gatwick Express. Anyone who believes privatising the rail system was a good idea had obviously never enjoyed the 30-minute train ride from London's Gatwick Airport to Victoria Station for roughly £27.50 (approx $40). Given these prices, I was expecting a smallish piece from the royal jewel collection but only received free attitude from the Eastern European conductor. Pity!

Lord Coe, himself a double Olympic gold medallist, has described the London 2012 Olympics as “the greatest show on earth” and a “once in a life time opportunity,” and it is likely that the organisers will have a tough time on their hands as the majority of the events, if not all of them, are likely to be highly sought after.

London 2012 Summer Olympics Tickets & Tours: International Olympic Committee's Shopping List Revealed

www.london2012-tours.com
www.london-tours-2012.com

As Spyns gears up to launch is London 2012 Summer Games website, Londoners are starting to resent the growing list of demands by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Entire hotels have been reserved for IOC fart catchers, the Union Jack must be smaller than the Olympic Flag and, of particular insult, French will be the official language of the London 2012 games.

In a WikiLeaks world, Britain's document cache is just as long, just as embarrassing to the UK, and just as closely held as the collected thoughts of the U.S. diplomatic corps: it is the complete, contractually binding and previously confidential set of demands made by the 115-member International Olympic Committee (IOC) on poor old London for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Like the WikiLeaks, the Olympics leak is by turns creepy and amusing. And it is just as revealing in its detail. Londoners already knew, for instance, about the politburo nature of the IOC. What Brits did not know is that London is, according to these contracts, required to provide the IOC and the ‘Olympic Family’ (including the Committee members, staff and officials) with 40,000 hotel-room bookings for the entire duration of the Games.

This includes 1,800 four and five-star hotel rooms for the IOC elite. Six Park Lane hotels have been booked out for the duration of the Games, including the Dorchester, the Grosvenor and the Hilton. The 40,000-room booking does not, of course, include accommodation for the competitors themselves — they are having an Olympic Village built for them at a cost to taxpayer of £325 million. Nor is any accommodation being reserved for spectators. On the evidence of the documents, visitors to the Games will probably find that any hotel within a 50-mile radius of London is already fully booked by the third assistant director of the Togolese handball federation and his extensive support staff.

We knew the IOC was being given 250 miles of so-called ‘Zil’ lanes — named after the old Soviet limousines that enjoyed traffic-free passage. They will stretch from London to Weymouth, where the sailing games are being held. It now emerges that there will also be 500 air-conditioned limos whose drivers must wear hats and uniforms. The IOC does love its little details. The hat stipulation is one of literally hundreds of examples of its micro-management. London must provide a ‘dance café’ in the Olympic Village, so that the athletes can boogie together.

A flower shop is also required, which the IOC insists ‘should provide a range of flowers and gifts for customers in the Olympic Village’. British taxpayers will be relieved to know that ‘a balloon rental service is optional’. The guidance given by the Olympocrats can be bewildering — it offers pages of information about the employment of housekeepers for the athletes, for example. ‘It is recommended that the same housekeeping staff perform their duties for the same teams daily’, because this will ‘build relationships and trust’, ‘give confidence’ and ‘maintain standards’. Making the bed is not enough.

These IOC edicts are called the ‘Olympic technical manuals’. They are attached to the contract signed by the then Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, when we won the right to host the Games in July 2005.  The contract itself was later made public, but for years London 2012 and City Hall refused to publish the manuals, furiously resisting Freedom of Information requests on the grounds that the ‘confidence of the IOC’ must not be breached. It took two years of campaigning by Paul Charman, a strikingly determined east Londoner, for the documents to come to light.  The real reason, perhaps, for this sensitivity is not because of the hats, the dance cafés or any of the other petty embarrassments. It is because the documents show that the British authorities have cravenly agreed to let the IOC create what is, in effect, a state within a state.

During the Games, normal London life, including ordinary commerce and the right to basic freedoms, must be subordinated to the five-ring circus that is the Olympic ‘brand protection’ policy. The IOC is paranoid about what it calls ‘ambush marketing’, which it claims is a ‘serious potential threat to the Olympic Movement’ even if it admits that it has, in fact, ‘not been a significant problem in the past’.  Ambush marketing, in the Olympocrats’ eyes, appears to be any branding or promotion for an organisation which has not paid large amounts of money to the Olympics organisers.

Candidate cities, the manuals say, ‘are required to obtain control of all billboard advertising, city transport advertising, airport advertising etc for the duration of the Games and the month preceding it to support the marketing programme’. The cost of hiring these billboards alone will surely be enormous. Customs officers and police must ‘co-operate’ in taking action against unapproved Olympics advertising and the confiscation of non-official goods. So in other words, police officers may be diverted from catching criminals to enforcing the commercial interests of the IOC. Customs officers, instead of searching for heroin and child pornography, may end up targeting fake Olympics T-shirts.

Spectators at the Games ‘must not wear clothes or accessories with commercial messages other than the manufacturers’ brand name’. So, for instance, any ten-year-old boy who is foolish enough to wear his Manchester United replica shirt, emblazoned with the commercial logo of the team’s sponsor Aon, could be forced to remove it or be denied admission to the Games.
No ‘athlete or other participant’ at the Games can wear any clothing on which the manufacturer’s name takes up more than 10 per cent of the surface area, or 12 square centimetres. No journalist covering the Games is allowed any ‘signage of any kind’, even for his or her own publication — on ‘camera bags, hats or other garments’.

The toughest restrictions apply inside and immediately around the Olympics venues (if you’re a newsagent next to, say, Greenwich Park with a Pepsi sign on your shopfront, heaven help you). But there are also quite serious restrictions in so-called ‘Level 4’ areas — that is, the whole of the rest of the city — in which the organisers of the London Games ‘must attempt to exert as much control over advertising as possible’.  Brand protection teams’ will, according to the manuals, ‘conduct surveillance . . . in the [host] city’. They must ‘attempt to confiscate any infringing ambush material whether inside or outside the venue’.

So much for the idea that it was just the police that had search-and-seizure powers on the streets of London. Some of the teams will be accompanied by ‘an attorney, in case it becomes necessary to serve any court documents’. And they ‘must have a police officer within the team or on call within range to assist if necessary in the enforcement of the orders’. Here, things become even more grandiose. There is even, according to the documents, an ‘airspace plan’ for London 2012, ‘to prohibit any [non-sponsored] presence within the airspace above Olympic venues, and in the surrounding areas within the host city’. However, even the IOC has the grace to admit that ‘there may be obstacles to carrying out airspace requirements completely. For example, it may be impossible to alter the regular flight pattern of commercial airlines’.

Long-suffering taxpayers have been given the impression that the Games will put our nation on the global map, but the documents suggest that something rather different will happen. In fact, a geographical space off north-west Europe currently occupied by a nation called Britain will, for the duration of the Games, be taken over by an entirely new country. For at every ceremony during London 2012, by contractual requirement, the Olympic flag must be more prominent than the Union flag: ‘Precedence of flags: Olympic Flag, Flag of the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOG) or city, flag of the province, region or canton, national flag,’ the manuals insist.

Her Majesty will doubtless acquiesce to the IOC’s demands for an Olympic ceremony and royal reception on the day before the Games officially open, although it is worth noting that she has little choice. The documents make clear that, as a matter of course, ‘IOC members are presented to the Head of State’, after which they will all watch ‘an artistic programme reflecting local traditions or culture’. What a national triumph. Naturally, the costs associated with all of this are not borne purely by the British taxpayer: £1.4 billion of sponsorship has been raised to finance the games, and the IOC will contribute tens of millions more.

The trouble is that the burden on the taxpayer has already reached roughly £12 billion. We may be paying the piper, but these documents show that it is the IOC who is calling the tune. In perhaps the most insulting touch of all, London must ‘ensure that billboards and pageantry are displayed throughout the city’.  As well as being in English, ‘such billboards and pageantry shall be in French’ — which is the second language of the IOC. London beat Paris to host the 2012 Olympics, and yet we are required to plaster our capital city with thousands of posters in French. England may still be sore about losing the World Cup last week — but by God, look at the Olympic guidelines and you’ll realise that we dodged a bullet. There really are only so many Zil lanes and smartly dressed chauffeurs a country can put up with.

Tickets on Sale: London 2012 Summer Olympic Games

http://www.london2012-tours.com/
http://www.london-tours-2012.com/

Olympic organisers have started pre-registration to sell tickets to the London 2012 summer games. While signing up online does not guarantee a pass, it is a shortcut to the public ballot for 75 per cent of tickets. ‘Anyone who signs up will be in pole position,’ said Paul Deighton, London 2012 chief executive on Monday.

‘The aim is to make the process as easy as possible and get people thinking about which events they want to watch from all the different Olympic and Paralympic sports. We expect people to be more interested in tickets for some events than others. ‘There is no fairer way for people to get in line for those tickets than by public ballot.’ Originally, there were to be 7.7million tickets for the Olympics and 1.5million for the Paralympic Games but the figure has now risen to 8million and 2million, on sale from next spring. Mr Deighton stayed tight-lipped about prices but said there would be ‘millions of affordable and accessible tickets’. Critics have long bemoaned that tickets are generously distributed to sponsors, Olympic committee members, and government officials yet real fans receive few affordable tickets.

Sadly, hospitality tickets will account for less than one per cent of passes on sale. Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Simmonds said it was important true sports fans would be in the crowd, adding: ‘It will be good for the atmosphere. My friends are all interested in tickets and want to see me. I bet there will be lots of people who will want to see events at a home Olympics and Paralympics.’

Fashion chain Next has been given its biggest design challenge yet – to create clothes to inspire British athletes to Olympic glory. The Leicestershire company will help Team GB's quest for gold after being asked to produce about 5,000 outfits for athletes and officials to wear at the opening and closing ceremonies of 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, in London.

The retailer will also provide formal suits, as well as furnishings and linen for the athletes' village. Next, which will be an official sponsor, would not say how much the deal was worth. It said some jobs would be created at its Enderby design studio. Experts said sales would increase as a result of the deal, which will see the group create a range of London 2012 clothing and homeware for its stores. Christos Angelides, Next executive director, said: "We are all proud of the British athletes and look forward to helping in a small way to make them look great at the Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies. "We also look forward to providing our customers with exclusive access to a range of clothing and homeware that reflects the excitement and atmosphere of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games."

A Next spokesman said: "There's going to be a group of designers on this."A few new jobs will be created as a result." Paul Deighton, chief executive of London 2012, said: "I'm confident Next will create a fantastic look for the athletes, officials and staff as well as helping us to make the London 2012 product available across the country."Julie King, head of fashion and textiles at De Montfort University, said: "It's a great coup for Next. "I think it will have a positive impact on their sales."David Hughes, chief executive of Prospect Leicestershire, the agency charged with promoting county businesses, said: "It will be great to see a Leicestershire firm so prominently flying the flag for Team GB at the Olympics. "It will really help to put the county on the map."Next is not the only Leicestershire company benefiting from the London 2012 Games.

Plumbing and heating equipment supplier BSS Group, of Lee Circle, Leicester, and powered access equipment hire firm Lavendon, of Lutterworth, are helping to operate one of two plant hire centres used by builders of the Olympic Park.

London 2012 Olympics Tickets and Tours: Calls for Ticketing Transparency

http://www.london2012-tours.com/

London 2012 organisers have been urged to be up front about how many tickets will be available for the Olympics and how much they will cost. The London Assembly's economic development, culture, sport and tourism committee said the public needed to have faith in the ticketing system. Games organisers said details would be revealed after the Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver had finished. There will be 9.2 million seats available during the event. The committee has written to London 2012 chiefs requesting details on how they plan to fill seats at the Games.

Committee Chair Dee Doocey said: "The key issue is simple: How many people will be ahead of the average Londoner in the queue for Olympic tickets? "Locog - London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games - needs to be open and transparent about how many tickets are going to be available for the public and how many are going to be reserved for the Olympic family.
We will be making an announcement about our ticketing strategy after the Vancouver Paralympic Games has finished

"These tickets for International Olympic Committee staff, officials, partners and sponsors will significantly reduce the number of seats available for the public." The committee said it would like to know how many tickets will be available at less than £10, £20 and £30 and how they will be shared out among the events. Other questions included how any possible stand-by scheme for unused tickets might work and who, if anyone, would count as a priority group for preferential or low-cost tickets.
London 2012 should publish its ticketing strategy in draft form as soon as possible to allow the public to comment on it before it is finalised, the committee advised. Tickets for the Games will not go on sale until 2011, according to Locog. A London 2012 spokesman said: "We will be making an announcement about our ticketing strategy after the Vancouver Paralympic Games has finished." The 2010 Paralympics is scheduled to finish on 21 March.
